The Witness es la historia de una joven mujer amish y su hijo, quienes se ven envueltos en el asesinato de un agente antinarcóticos encubierto. John Book, detective de Philadelphia, los rescata y los lleva de regreso a la comunidad amish de Pennsylvania y al mundo no violento que los amish han creado. Los asesinos ubican su paradero - con la intención de asesinar al muchacho y a Book - pero la comunidad (el Tercer Lado) actúa para prevenir que ello suceda. Simplemente dando testimonio, la comunidad es capaz de evitar esas muertes.
